Clay art: why working with your hands matters

Weekly28 Jun 20263 min readBy Dipika Konwar

Clay modelling is one of the most enjoyable modules we run, and one of the most educational.

Three-dimensional thinking

A drawing has two dimensions. A clay model must work from every angle, which develops spatial understanding.

Hand strength and control

Rolling, pinching and coiling build hand strength in a way no worksheet can.

Mistakes are not permanent

Clay can always be reshaped. Children who fear making mistakes on paper often relax completely with clay.

Calm and focus

Working with clay is genuinely calming. We often see restless students settle down within minutes.

Clay Art is offered as a regular class and is also part of the Creative Art & Craft Workshop.
