Why colour mixing is the most useful lesson we teach

Weekly02 Aug 20263 min readBy Dipika Konwar

Most beginners think a bigger colour box means better paintings. In our class we teach the opposite.

Start with the primaries

Red, blue and yellow — mixed correctly — produce almost every colour a student needs. Understanding this removes the fear of the palette.

The colour wheel is not decoration

Every student completes their own colour wheel. Once they see how secondary and tertiary colours form, mixing stops being guesswork.

Warm and cool changes the whole mood

The same drawing painted in warm tones and then cool tones feels completely different. Children find this fascinating.

Shadows are never black

One of the biggest jumps in a young artist's work comes the day they stop using black for shadows and start mixing them.

Colour mixing is taught in our regular Painting Class and covered in depth in the ₹499 Creative Art & Craft Workshop.
