Materials every beginner actually needs (and what to skip)

Weekly05 Jul 20263 min readBy Dipika Konwar

Parents often spend a lot on art supplies before the first class. Please don't — here is what is genuinely required.

Bring on day one

  • A plain drawing sketchbook (A4 is fine)
  • HB and 2B pencils
  • A good eraser and sharpener
  • A basic box of oil pastels or colour pencils

Add later, once the child continues

  • Watercolour set and brushes
  • Acrylic colours and a small canvas
  • Craft scissors, glue and coloured paper

Skip for now

  • Very large professional sets — most colours go unused
  • Expensive branded kits marketed for children

We guide every new student on exactly what to buy after the first class, so nothing is wasted.
