What age should a child start drawing classes?

Weekly09 Aug 20263 min readBy Dipika Konwar

We are asked this every admission season. The short answer: a child can start as soon as they can hold a pencil comfortably. What changes is the method, not the age limit.

Ages 5–8 — play first

At this stage we focus on free drawing, colouring, shapes and simple craft. The aim is enjoyment and grip control, not perfection.

Ages 9–12 — fundamentals

Now proportion, shading and colour theory are introduced properly. This is the age where real skill starts to build.

Ages 13+ — technique & portfolio

Watercolour, acrylic, canvas work, clay modelling and portfolio building for students who want to take art seriously.

Adults are welcome too

Several of our learners are adults who never got the chance as children. It is never too late to start.

Whatever the age, our approach stays the same — step-by-step practical learning with individual attention.
